Make the planting groups look natural on an informal pond by using the full width of a planting shelf.Choose a waterlily or waterlilies of the size that will give your pond at least a 50% coverage in 3 years using the spread details on the description page of each waterlily variety.Select two portions of submerged oxygenating plants per square metre of pond surface area.Choose a selection of both upright marginal plants (sent in 11cm baskets) and horizontally rafting plants (sent in 9cm baskets) to give a balance for both wildlife and water quality.Use more plants if the shelf is wider than 30cm(12″) or if a full look is required quickly.Use a minimum of 3x 11cm or 3x 9cm marginal aquatic baskets per metre length on a marginal pond shelf. They will be ready to grow on as soon as the weather in your area encourages them. Using a mesh contour basket to help in planting your pond shelf: An upright plant can be softened by a rafting aquatic plant provided that each is placed in the correct depth of water according to its individual plant label.Place the aquatic pond plants on the shelves in their baskets in groups, not as individual baskets.Stagger the plants where possible rather than lining them around the outside edge. This will add weight to the group and the 3 baskets will stand upright as the base is heavier.Add 3x 11cm baskets to one contour basket and fill all the surrounding space within the contour basket with gravel.Tall plants in a linered pond will often blow over as they grow.If you have built a large pond that needs to look mature quickly then plant 3x 11cm baskets of each variety into a contour basket (if your pond has a liner in it).
